Is Your Medications Causing You Harm

Last week I was having some different symptoms other that the "normal" symptoms of arachnoiditis. I had begun to choke in my sleep and waking up with reflux and that nights dinner in my mouth and bed pillow. My blood pressure and heart rate were both high.

Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The brand name is Mobic. It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. 

Meloxicam is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis in adults. Meloxicam can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Meloxicam may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. These conditions can occur without warning while you are using meloxicam, especially in older adults.

In addition to its needed effects, some unwanted effects may be caused by meloxicam. In the event that any of these side effects do occur, they may require medical attention.

You should check with your doctor immediately if any of these side effects occur when taking meloxicam:

Less common

• Arm, back, or jaw pain
• bleeding gums
• bloating
• blood in the urine
• blurred vision
• burning upper abdominal or stomach pain
• canker sores
• chest tightness or heaviness
• chills
• cloudy urine
• cough
• cramping
• dark urine
• decreased frequency or amount of urine
• difficult or labored breathing
• dilated neck veins
• dizziness
• dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position

• fast, weak pulse
• fever with or without chills
• greatly decreased frequency of urination or amount of urine

• puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
• red skin lesions, often with a purple center
• red, irritated eyes
• red, swollen skin
• scaly skin
• severe stomach pain
• shortness of breath
• tightness in the chest
• unpleasant breath odor
• unusual tiredness or weakness
• vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
• wheezing

• Difficulty with speaking
• double vision
• inability to move the arms, legs, or facial muscles
• inability to speak
• pains in the chest, groin or legs, especially the calves
• severe headaches of sudden onset
• slow speech
• sudden loss of coordination
• sudden onset of shortness of breath for no apparent reason
• sudden onset of slurred speech
• sudden vision changes

If any of the following symptoms of overdose occur while taking meloxicam, get emergency help immediately:

• Blue lips, fingernails, or skin
• convulsions (seizures)
• pain in the chest, upper stomach, or throat
• severe stomach pain
• skin rash
• slow or fast heartbeat
• swelling around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
• weight gain (rapid)

Severity: Minor

Some of the side effects that can occur with meloxicam may not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away. Your health care professional may also be able to tell you about ways to reduce or prevent some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects continue, are bothersome or if you have any questions about them, check with your health care professional:

It is important to know the side effects of the prescription medications that you are taking. After stopping Meloxicam, my blood pressure and heart rate have been in the normal range. I have had an increase in pain but with the side effects and the way my body reacted to this medication, it was best to discontinue.
